WEARABLE SCULPTURE

I am obsessed with paper. If I am not dancing on it with charcoal to make kinetic drawings, then I am using it as a medium to construct a wearable sculpture. While living in Korea, I found "hanji"--translated as "Korean paper" and I fell in love. Its incredible texture and fabric-like behaviour lead me to experiment with water, heat and sculpting to create texture, patterns and shapes. Today the designs play with themes of sustainability and reuse, tropes of beauty and feminine/masculine dichotomous energies, and illumination and lighting design. Although a paper dress is admittedly not the most practical design, these dresses are suprisingly robust and have been commissioned for permanent exhibit, photoshoots, special events and costumes for dance, theatre and film. Known for its durability, long fibers, and natural texture, it is used for a wide range of applications, from historical documents and calligraphy to modern crafts and interior design, it is said to last for 1000 years.
